Movie of the day...LORD OF MISRULE (2023)
Movie of the day...Lord of Misrule (2023).
A solid British folk horror tale.
Rebecca Holland (Tuppence Middleton), the new vicar of Berrow, is a little curious about the village’s harvest festival and its pagan traditions, but it all seems like harmless fun. And then her daughter Grace (Evie Templeton) disappears. The police investigate, but as the days pass there are more and more signs that a larger conspiracy is at work , and that what lies behind it is ancient and terrible.
The cast offers strong performances and there is a sense of growing paranoia as the story progresses. More and more people seem to be involved in Grace’s disappearance. Who can Rebecca trust? Is there anyone she can trust?
Both the beautiful, sometimes haunting cinematography and the often discordant soundtrack, used to show Rebecca’s mental turmoil, further develop the sense of unease.
In a movie like this, a lot depends on the ending. This one is pretty good, but it isn’t entirely satisfying. Rebecca’s choices at the end make sense, but they also feel at odds with who she is supposed to be, especially given what has happened to innocent people in Berrow, and the brief epilogue raises more questions than it answers.
