Controversial Opinion: Shoplifting Should Actually Be Illegal
Maybe, just maybe, walking into a store, taking merchandise that belongs to someone else, and leaving without paying for it should be illegal.
Now before everyone attacks me, hear me out. I understand that theft can be complicated. I understand there are broader economic and social issues. I understand that corporations aren't perfect and that some businesses make a lot of money.
But at the same time, if I walk into a store and take something that isn't mine, that still seems like stealing.
Lately I've seen a surprising number of people act as if enforcing laws against shoplifting is somehow controversial. Stores locking up merchandise, hiring security, or wanting people prosecuted gets treated like some outrageous overreaction.
Maybe I'm old-fashioned, but it seems pretty reasonable for a business to expect that the products on its shelves won't be taken without payment.
And before someone says, "It's just a big corporation," remember that stores don't magically absorb losses. Prices go up. Products get locked behind glass. Locations close. Employees deal with the consequences. Everyone else ends up paying for it one way or another.
