ICU nurse considering a liaison role. Has anyone regretted giving up the 12-hour shift lifestyle?
I’m looking for advice from people who have left bedside nursing for a liaison/coordinator-type role, or who chose to stay at the bedside.
I’m currently an ICU nurse working 12-hour shifts. I work 5 shifts per pay period (56 hours) and receive critical care and night shift premiums. I genuinely enjoy critical care, have a great manager, and work with a team I trust.
I’ve recently been offered a full-time liaison nurse position in internal medicine. The role itself actually interests me quite a bit. I enjoy care coordination, systems-level thinking, discharge planning, and the broader impact the role can have on patient outcomes.
My problem is the schedule.
The liaison role is Monday to Friday, 7am-4pm, 9 days per pay period (80 hours). I’d have weekends and holidays off, more predictable vacation time, and less physical strain. But I’d also be working 4 more days every pay period than I do now.
For those who have made a similar transition:
Did you miss having large blocks of time off?
Did the Monday-Friday schedule improve or worsen your quality of life?
Did you feel like you lost freedom, or did the predictability make up for it?
