Condemnation of Martinism (Church of Rome)

Rome condemns Freemasonry, Rome condemns occultism, Martinism has historical relations with both, therefore Martinism is condemned. Therefore no further thought is required. This is precisely the kind of intellectual shortcut that makes serious discussion impossible. If the case against Martinism is to be made, then let it be made seriously, not by dumping it into a generic box labelled “Masonry and occultism” and pretending the work is done. The usual accusation is clear enough: Masonry was condemned because it became a vehicle of rationalism, naturalism, secularism, liberalism, revolutionary politics, bourgeois modernity, and all the usual children of the Enlightenment; occultism was condemned because it often degenerates into spiritual ambition, manipulation of invisible forces, magical voluntarism, self-divinization, and the attempt to bend the spiritual order to the desires of the ego. Fine. Let us grant all of that in its strongest possible form. Let us even say that those condemnations are not paranoid, not merely political, not merely reactionary, and have a real theological and spiritual logic behind them. The problem is that, once this is granted, Martinism becomes more difficult to condemn, not easier, because the specificity of Martinism is precisely that it stands against both of these deviations from within the very terrain where they appeared. A Martinist who studies symbolism, numbers, Kabbalah, the astral, Tarot, angelology, the fall, reintegration, the hierarchy of beings, or the secret anatomy of the human soul IN ORDER TO acquire power, dominate others, win material advantages, inflate his ego, or make himself into some ridiculous little god has betrayed Martinism itself. He has missed the whole point. The Martinist path is a discipline of spiritual regeneration. It is not to control the invisible. A transfiguration of desire until the personal will can be brought back into the heart of the Will of God. The lazy equation between Martinism and vulgar occultism is so misleading. Conventional occultism wants techniques. Martinism wants transformation. Conventional occultism flatters the ego with the promise of hidden power. Martinism humiliates the ego by showing it the distance between its fallen present and its original vocation. And the same is true on the philosophical and political side. If Masonry is condemned because it became the carrier of Enlightenment rationalism, naturalism, anti-traditional ideology, and revolutionary abstraction, then why is nobody willing to notice that the Martinist currents inside the Masonic world were the very forces resisting those tendencies? Why do we pretend that “Masonry” was one single metaphysical bloc when, in reality, the eighteenth century initiatic world was full of internal conflict, contradiction, and struggle? The secularizing Mason, the rationalist Mason, the bourgeois lodge politician, the abstract humanitarian, the Voltairean enemy of mystery, and the Martinist theosopher do not belong to the same spiritual type. To collapse them into one category is not discernment. Saint-Martin was not a disciple of Voltaire. He was mocked by both Voltaire and Goethe because he belonged to another universe. He fought the Encyclopedists, the naturalists, the reduction of man to mechanism, the reduction of religion to superstition, the reduction of reason to calculation, the reduction of society to ideology, and the reduction of the soul to nature. Philosophically, Martinism is far closer to philosophical Romanticism (Baader, Novalis, Schelling, Coleridge, Herder, Schleiermacher) than to the rationalist Enlightenment. Herder (Strict Templar Observance), Jacobi (Illuminati), Maistre (CBCS), Saint-Martin, Willermoz, Eckartshausen, they absolutely cannot be described as servants of modern secular rationalism. Maistre in particular was about as far from revolutionary bourgeois secularism as one can get. Are Catholics who condemn Martinism actually condemning Martinism, or are they condemning a caricature produced by their own inability to distinguish between hostile currents inside the initiatic world? The usual condemnation takes the most vulgar form of occultism, the most secular form of Masonry, and then reads Martinism through both, even though Martinism, at its highest level, is the initiatic current that most explicitly opposed to the spiritual diseases represented by both. The question is whether it has ever really been understood deeply enough.
