Chronic pelvic abscess after rectal cancer surgery
Hi my father is 66, rectal cancer survivor (diagnosed back in 2020 and has had chemo, radiation, and multiple surgeries), 5’6, about 160 lbs. he has a permanent colostomy and has been dealing with a chronic pelvic abscess that has not healed. He’s gone through many treatments for this all proving futile. One surgeon recommends prolonged endosponge approach while another recommends major surgery to remove the remaining rectum/anus and permanently divert everything through the ostomy. I’m looking for advice on which treatment approach to go with and even looking for recommendations for surgeons who specialize in complex reoperative pelvic surgery in the NYC area to possibly get another opinion from. Thinking maybe 3rd opinion to tilt the scale? It’s very scary as his last surgery he had an ileus and was on an NG tube for 5 days. I just want to do what’s best for him. Any advice would be great.
