ewr-bkk tips?

planning to go bangkok in august/September , what would be the best route as a nonrev to bangkok, would ewr-nrt-bkk, be better or any other options. Also how is immigration like in thailand? ive heard of scams and its my first time . Kind of a bunched up questions but really just looking for tips and must go places , from people who have been there.
