What is the tunnel made of in the novel?

I just finished the book, and the passage is described as being downy like fur at one point, and then later in the same running sequence it’s described as feeling like the mouth of something much older than the other mother.

How would a furry segment and a throat segment connect in one straight line? it doesn’t make sense to me. unless it wasn’t a mouth? i shudder at the thought.
