Is this a named phenomenon?
So I'm a massage therapist, but I'd assume this isn't strictly tied to massage. I've noticed that the more dramatic someone acts about needing a massage the less likely they are to come in and get one.
For example if someone tells me they have been desperately searching all over for a massage therapist for a chronic pain and they are literally crying themselves to sleep and they think I'm the only person who can help them, they are almost guaranteed not to come in. If someone comes in and profusely praises me and tells me they are going to come back once a week because I've changed their life and they are going to start taking care of themselves, I'll never see them again.
Is there a term for this or a mental illness associated with being overly dramatic when you are less likely to do something? I know some personal trainers that tell me they get people like this who act extremely motivated at the idea of exercise and end up being the least committal and least motivated clients they have.
