Theory: Kris and Carol want to save Dess FROM the Knight.
So before Ch5 I decided to binge watch every theory video and I had this idea while doing that. It's not a theory that "solves everything" and tbh I haven't thought enough about it to parry every counter argument but I wanted to get it out there in case it actually became real and I could tell everyone I was the only one right muahahaha!
Anyway
The main concept
The Asriel knight video I was watching said the knight design could be Dess's OC that Asriel was piloting and I thought... Wait. What if it was Dess's OC... Full stop. Her OC would be rebellious like her. Rebellious against what? Well, the one thing keeping it down: the Darkners / lighter dynamic. Which made me want to reinterpret everything the knight has done, not as proof of being Kris and Carol's ally, but enemy.
The story
I set the scene. Kris and Dess go explore the shelter (which is probably more or less what happened) and they find or learn to create the dark world inside. Ramb's dialog in Ch3 tells us Kris and (likely) Dess used play pretend with all the objects and some interpret it as saying that all the Darkners personalities and stories were created by them at that time. Maybe the Knight was too. Kris is a knight. Maybe Dess also played the role of one and made an OC that fits her. Rebellious. Headstrong. Shaking the status quo. When they then got into the shelter dark world (→ leads to Kris having already a save), they make their games real and Dess creates the Knight. But the Knight, who has her rebellious qualities, refuses his state of Darkner, refuses to serve. He wants to break the status quo and get Freedom™.
Now that's the part I leave as an exercise for the reader but the Knight does... something and locks Dess into the Depths or smth. Asgore arrives at the shelter, alerted as the kids were not answering their phones. Carol is with him, she won't just let someone else look for her kid. We know Asgore saw something there that no one will believe. Maybe... the Knight. Asgore wants to alert the town but Carol cannot let him. The Knight has Dess hostage. And he will use that has leverage to command Carol and Kris to help him bring about the Roaring or something that can reverse the lightener / darkner dynamic.
The Knight mimics Kris' positions not because they're linked, but to mock them, like he's constantly taunting the gang. Kris avoids hurting him because they can't, even tho they want. And only does so when angered when the gang is down. The shadow mantle was likely created as défense against the Knight OC back when Kris and Dess were playing.
Well it sounded better in my head. It's not my first crazy theory but it's the first I found compelling enough to post. I was just interested in the "maybe Carol and Kris aren't really the Knight's allies" because it's an assumption every other theory makes (for good reasons) so in case Tricky Tony pulls the truck on us, I could've said I saw it coming XD There is definitely counter evidences to my theory, you can throw it at me. (Still better than piles of Asriel dust 2 :p) But I think there's definitely potential to improve it and fix the holes so if anyone finds it compelling, you can add more evidence that fits.
Anyway. Carol Knight for the win. Peace. 🤞
