I had a great, fun, happy childhood; we just never once talked about emotions beyond surface level. Anyone relate?
I'm very aware that my life was/is pretty good. I can still laugh and smile with my parents to this day and they didn't abuse me (the most punishment I received was a rare spank or knock on the head when I was little). I'm grateful for them. So, you can tell me if I'm overreacting.
What always bothered me is that we have never ever spoken on deep feelings. The only times I heard the words "I feel [insert feeling here]" were the times when my parents expressed their anger over the occasional annoying person they'd encounter or more severe events, like deaths in the family.
Rant ahead . . .
They never talked about how they felt. And they never once (in my memory, anyway) asked, "How does that make you feel?" I think it's because the few times I went out of my way to be emotionally vulnerable, I was shut down harder than I expected. For example, I would talk about my crush or my type and my mother would say, "You should only like people that are the same race as us because then we can speak the same language and we already share the same culture." I stopped talking about my love interests after that. Or when I was struggling during school and getting bad grades when I was usually a straight A in grade school she immediately accused me of being lazy and she started crying. I feel like I do everything based on how I think my mother will react. Anyway, I had no motivation to do school work, but I did care about how well I did in school, believe me. And turns out, I have a neurological disorder that affects learning... I think my school life would have turned out differently if my mom showed a little more empathy during those times. I was really young (not even a teen yet), I clearly didn't know what the hell was going on with me haha. And during all that, my dad chose to be silent.
Sorry for the rant. But I was wondering if people could relate. I had a pretty good childhood, but the fact that we never discussed our feelings in our house makes me a bit sad about what could have been. I love my parents, but oftentimes I just can't find it in myself to like them.
