Unintentionally got someone fired
Just a rant/cent post because I honestly feel bad? Long-ish story unfortunately , I’m an apprentice and have only been working in construction about 3 months. I work on a large jobsite with numerous trades and contractors on site. Since about my second month there, there’s an older guy who’s been going out of his way to talk to me. Completely separate trade, our scopes of work are completely different and do not intersect whatsoever. At first it was harmless and I just assumed he was being friendly. Then one of the guys on my crew made a comment about the fact that he’s never spoken to any of them men on our crew, yet finds a reason every day to talk to me. After that I definitely started getting a little weirded out by it, but never said anything. Over the past 2 weeks he patted my hip when walking past me while I was on a ladder and made a comment that he ‘noticed how I walk up the stairs different than everyone else’.
I know it’s probably stupid but the comment about me on the stairs really made me uncomfortable, because I have no idea why he’d be paying that much attention to me to notice something stupid like that.
I ended up saying something to my foreman yesterday just to see if I was being dramatic or not. He reported to upper management and the guy ended up being fired. I feel bad because maybe it wasn’t that serious, and I feel like it’s my fault he lost his job. 😔
