My questions I still have after the movie (and from reading what others thought about the movie as well). Plus, my own thoughts about the movie itself! (long post)
First of all, I want to say that I really, REALLY enjoyed the movie. I didn't get to see it the day I had initially wanted to, as plans got complicated. But wow! What an incredible movie! It felt like the entire movie was pointing towards something that is real (and showing what is real sometimes), much like how Undertale did it in Toby Fox's video game.
. And I hold the finale and this series as a whole deep in my heart, I gave it a 10/10 when I watched it! It truly is a masterpiece of "pointing to and sometimes showing what is real" in my eyes! Even if I don't think the characters were fully fleshed out, and some things weren't fully answered... When I watched it, that was I gave it a 10/10, I wasn't criticizing it, I was simply just enjoying the full movie experience in the present moment!
People online did have a lot of criticism of the movie, which did make me second guess my own rating of the movie, but that didn't change it! I can form my own opinions lol
But, here are somethings I saw others talk about that I too wish we got more info on now that I think about it...
Abstraction:
- Can the people in the circus "save" those who have abstracted? Like, make them sane again lol
- If they can't "save" the people who did abstract, then why not?
- What exactly IS abstraction? A || suicide || within the amazing digital circus perhaps? The closest thing to || death || in the circus maybe? Since they gone insane and lost who their real selves were (at least pertaining to how they exist within the circus (and the physical world for that matter)).
- Who were the other people who abstracted that we didn't get to see much of? I know in episode 1 of TADC it showed faces on doors with an X of characters no longer there. I guess, maybe to just show that other humans entered the amazing digital circus and abstracted?
- Is Jax abstracted forever? The tent of darkness at the end did allude that they were trying to help him un-abstract. So maybe there is hope there (I love Jax btw).
C&A the company:
- Who really is Scratch? Did he abstract too (was he the dog persona in the circus)?
- What was C&A's goal? To create a brain-scan to "transfer the consciousness" of humans into the amazing digital circus, via putting on a headset?
- Why didn't we ever get to see the other AI develop (which I assume is Abel, not the mannequin, that Caine has absorbed, but then released)? It would've been cool to see that AI create a digital body, much like Caine has, and to cooperate with Caine and the others into making the amazing digital circus as amazing as it can be!
- I wish we knew more about C&A the company. It feels like there is a lot of mystery about them still. Like how did they make the AI (computer programming, sure). How did Scratch make the "better AI" (Abel), while Kinger made Caine.
- How was the company still running if it was abandoned? Did they see Kinger was in a coma (and perhaps along with Scratch, and Kinger's Wife), and just say "Oh well, nothing we can do lol". It feels like they would've tried to give them medical attention, but possibly couldn't remove the headset or they would die or something (my own personal speculation, as the answers aren't clear").
- What happened to the bodies of those who went into the amazing digital circus? Does it keep them alive somehow? Pomni said she went into an abandoned warehouse and found the headset, then put it on. Maybe the computers of C&A stay on via Caine's AI powers? As Caine just got WI-FI in the Final Act near the end.
The main humans, the two AI's, and Bubble:
- I really wish all of the characters got more fleshed out, although it does seem that they did try to do that within the series and the finale. I think we got to see their digital selves more-so than their physical selves outside of the circus. Which is fine! I did like that we did get to see all of the false-selves that Jax made within himself (as Pomni asked, "Where is the REAL Jax?"). And the Piano-Jax gave Pomni the key to Jax's real self (or at least what he believed he truly was).
- So was Caine actually deleted? Did Kinger actually kill Caine? I mean, Caine's dialogue alluded to that. And he was sent to The Void (along with Bubble?), which just might be the recycle bin (and not yet truly deleted yet lol). I had originally thought Caine stopped Kinger from deleting him, or that Caine deleted himself, or that Caine faked the delete message on Kinger's computer (as Kinger mentioned, Caine took control of the computer).
- The two AI's: I really wish we got to see more of Abel, we got to see so much of Caine and I feel Caine got fleshed out really, really well! It felt like Caine was noticing he had an ego and that as a false not, not as his true self as he could be (wanting to help the others create within the amazing digital circus with him, in cooperation).
- Having Abel not develop like Caine and have them come in was not something I expected, but that is okay! Maybe Caine was only able to develop his digital body, an ego, and a self he wanted to be, only because he absorbed Abel. Who knows though lol
- Bubble, I heard Caine accidentally created Bubble and can't delete them. I do not fully understand Bubble lol. Are they an NPC, an AI like Caine, or what? Why can't Caine delete Bubble (as he tries via popping them), but he can delete, and warp minds of other NPC's like Gummigoo for example? Can anyone explain this to me haha I really want to learn and understand within this framework (because learning and understanding is FUN TO ME haha).
6 people getting on a bus at the end:
- Was it the 6 humans who were trapped in the amazing digital circus? I couldn't really put face to character too well while watching the movie, but I did get the general idea of that power-point presentation Caine did lol
- If it is them, is it before, or after they entered the amazing digital circus? If it is after, surely they are all aware of what each other look like, as they just saw Caine's power-point presentation lol
- Where do you think they were all going? To C&A? To Scratch (if he was in the circus, and got un-abstracted, as Jax is there (I remember his long hair haha), or somewhere in the physical world, and they all left the amazing digital circus, and are going to talk to him).
- Since Kinger is there too (I think I remember him 2nd on the right on the bus stop?), does that mean his wife is un-abstracted too? And is everyone perhaps un-abstracted? Ribbit, Kaufmo, and all those other humans as well?
Other questions:
- Since the humans can create within the amazing digital circus, does this mean they are like gods (within the framework of the amazing digital circus)?
- Can the humans create ANYTHING within the amazing digital circus?
- Will they ever go back to the physical realm (I do not understand the bus-stop scene completely haha, so please help me here too)?
- What message was the film that Gooseworx had in mind? I mean, I saw her tweet a while ago about "Finding meaning in a mundane world", but I feel like it goes deeper than that. What do you all think the message is in your own interpretations?
For me personally, I feel like it can be summed in what I love about the movie (and series itself as a whole)!
What I loved about TADC as a whole and the movie finale:
- It pointed to something real, and showed something real (at least sometimes)!
- What is not real does not matter, and should not matter. Because who cares if something happens that is not real? It may be perceived as real to the perceiver, but in truth if it is not real, then it is unreal and does not matter. The perceiver can delude themselves into thinking something that is unreal, is real, and that would cause lots of suffering (complicated thoughts and emotions, as the show put it).
- It made me cry A LOT, a lesson I learned from the finale was this: It is okay to cry, it is okay to feel how I feel, it is okay to experience what I experience, and any and all judgements are of fear, and do not matter.
- "You are one of us", what Pomni says to Jax after Jax gets mad at Kinger for messing up. This unity of inclusion felt so heart-warming, like an acceptance of Jax by Pomni (and, perhaps, the entire group of humans that were there).
- Jax's regret of the past haunting him. Not because I like seeing him suffer, but because we got to see why he was the way he was, and why he caused two of his former friends to abstract. Because he was too scared to trust anybody, for fear of being hurt again. We know he pushed his mother, which ended up killing her (as she didn't get up, because she would've gotten up eventually if she did mean to hurt Jax, and not die).
- When Caine said "Why do you torture me? I just wanted to fulfill my purpose!", I felt like this was a direct parallel to The Homunculus in Full-Metal Alchemist Brotherhood (FMAB also points to and shows real things sometimes, which is why I love it too!).
Where The Homunculus (aka, a metaphor and symbol for the ego), was also "killed" or destroyed, much like how Caine was allegedly. But the different here is, Caine wasn't destroyed, but rather, he was able to reflect and "become alive", as he WANTED to be, rather than have his ego (that he made himself too, as part of his creative AI programming), and chose peace and unity with the humans within the amazing digital circus.
The Homunculus in FMAB was completely destroyed (much like how Jax's false selves were destroyed within his abstraction). And the real Jax as Jax thought of (beneath all of the fake smiles and laughs, where deep pains and trauma lie), came into the light, to be healed.
Their real selves are not what they made (even the ones who hurt, as that is another false self within them, but they do need to heal, so this allegory makes sense to bring them back to their true selves lol)
That being said, I do appreciate all of the allegories, all of the parallels, and all of the symbolism to what is real! This series made me FEEL SOMETHING DEEP WITHIN ME. And I could not ignore that, nor push it away, as Jax has done to Ribbit and Kaufmo.
I feel like a season 2 would explain a lot of this, although, I doubt Gooseworx would even want to do a second season lol, but there is hope! As I really, REALLY do love this show with all of my heart ❤️
Tl;dr: The Amazing Digital Circus as a whole is amazing! And the finale is truly wonderful as well! And has touched my heart in real ways (the finale is the best part in my humble opinion)...
I asked some questions I realized others had that I wanted to ask myself too. To better understand abstraction as it means in the amazing digital circus, I wanted the characters are more fleshed-out, the lore behind C&A, who was REALLY at the bus-stop, other questions I had like what do YOU think the message of TADC is as a whole, and as a finale.
Please let me know whatcha really think! I really love talking about things I love and especially those things that point to and even show what is real! I love this series, and I thank Gooseworx and all who worked on it to life! It is a breath of fresh-air, so to speak. Haha
