Is it possible to *not* bring bed bugs home from a hotel room?

I stayed 2 nights in a state park lodge/hotel. Two days after we returned I noticed some bites on my arm, three of which were in a line. I stupidly hadn’t checked the room while we were there (I usually do an initial check but was there with kid and hubby and distracted) and we brought our stuff right inside when we got home. My and my daughter’s dirty clothes went right into the wash and dryer, but not on hot or high (cold water, medium heat). Once I saw the bites, we washed and dried everything that could be, anything that couldn’t be washed and dried we set outside in plastic bags and will steam treat before bringing it in. Suitcase still outside.

I read all these stories about bedbugs coming home with people, but is there a chance I may not have brought them with me? What actually has to happen to start an infestation? Either a pregnant female, eggs, or a male/female pair have to be brought home, is that correct? Eggs are harder to kill, is that correct? What is the likelihood that eggs got into my luggage? We didn’t keep it near the bed or on the floor, although my husband had some dirty clothes on the floor for a short period of time.

I know no one can say for sure, but I just wonder if there are times when people have been in rooms with bedbugs, gotten home and didn’t take precautions (at least not right away) and still managed not to get them. I’ll certainly be vigilant regardless, just trying not to panic so much.
