How to use hook up 3rd party router?

I have the standard kit 100mbps residential plan and I'd like to hook up my own router. How do I setup pass through? I read on this sub that bypass mode disables the router to pass power thru and I'll need an adapter? Or does that only apply to older models and I can just use the ethernet port on the router?
