Does the season wipe timer affect expedition?

Thinking of doing my first expedition, but wanted to know the significance of the timer on the screen which is i presume the seasonal wipe.

Does this timer have any effect other than resetting your expedition progress you've currently committed? or does it have a bigger impact? What happens if I go on expedition with 1 day before season reset?

Thanks
