I'm afraid AI will ruin my gamedev dream

Discussion

I don't know how to feel anymore, I go through phases like "It doesn't matter if people use AI to make games, I can just market my game as not having AI-Tools, I'm sure I can still make my dream come through", then a new model comes out and my mood gets destroyed and I just keep reading posts about if it will replace game devs.

I've spent so many years in my free time learning to make 3D models, learn to code, learn to paint, learned Ultrabox for making music (really cool free program btw, very easy to learn, I would no say I am good at making music but it allows even music noobs like me to make something that doesn't heart the ears).

I made so many practice projects and overcame so many coding problems and all of this hard work felt like it meant something.

Even a year ago I wasn't so "locked in" on AI, it seemed it can be helpful with some coding problems, but not to make a whole game.

Now I learned about codex and claude code, I've seen Fable 5, I've seen people one shot cheap minecraft clones with it and the AI even made the textures and sound effects. I even heard songs with no lyrics that sounded professional.

It's like the world is racing to replace all the skills needed for my dream specifically. You may say I have an advantage because I learned so much about these things, but how can I keep up with a machine that is so much faster than me? If this is just the beginning, then what will my skills even help me with if everyone has an AI companion that is even better at all those skills that can guide anybody?

If anyone can make a game with AI, just imagine how many games would come out. The games that get one shotted right now are still bad obviously, but look how they were 1 year ago. And you can already make something decent just by using english language and carefully talking to an AI... (something decent to people who don't care if something is AI-generated, at least.)

Even if I try to market my game as not using AI, what's stopping people from just lying and saying they don't use it, and imagine how much faster they could update the game and everything...

It just feels like I should give up, and just be stuck in a 9-5 forever. I know success with gamedev was never promised or anything, but now in a few years even if I make a game to my best ability, it might not even stand a chance against the future AI models. At least before this I had the hopes that if I really do make an amazing game, I will find people to play it.
