Mum just hit me with the "are you abandoning me?"

Context: my father (My bedridden Mum's sole carer) passed suddenly in March and I dropped everything and have been her 24/7 carer ever since. I can't continue to care for her in this house (nasty old house), not to the extent that she really properly requires. Dad thought he could handle it all at once and it eventually gave him a heart attack.

I was putting her to bed tonight and I mentioned the fancy new place she would eventually be staying (stupid Australian aged care system) and she hit me with "are you abandoning me?"

Me continuing full time care would mean I lose my job, house, mortgage, health, the whole thing. But I feel terrible that I'll be putting her in a home that's actually better for her.

Does the guilt ever go away?
