Neighbor drove car into backyard- advice pls!

Two weeks ago, I was woken up, because my neighbor drove his Mustang into my backyard, damaging our fence and landscaping and Sundays trees.

Some background, we live in a nice neighborhood, lots of families. He’s on the corner of the start of the court, and a main road in the neighborhood. One of the neighbors he lives in the court is always driving so fast and reckless, I always fear for my kids playing outside The way he takes the corner. So I guess I wasn’t very shocked when I open the door at midnight and it was this guy.

To make a long story short, this guy runs up into our backyard, An Uber driver witnessed it. I had time to go make a delivery and then came back to our door. In the meantime, the driver was able to call his wife he was separated fromand she managed to get here before he came to our door. He told us his car was in our yard, and then she reassured us that insurance, and they called and everything would be handled within a week. I don’t think they expected us to call the police. When the police arrived, the driver didn’t talk at all, his estranged wife did all the talking, introducing herself as officer (last name). No dui check, no impairment checks. The police report states he was going 20 to25, but there’s actually no way because my gate flew 30 ft.

My entire fence on one side is damaged, as well as 5 8 to 10 foot arborvitae trees. If they replace the fence, it won’t match the rest of my fence, and call me vain but I’m not sure that sits well with me. So what we would need covered is the removal of five arborvitae’s, replacement of the trees, mulching, landscaping that was damaged, fence, removal, fence installation. Insurance gave us an estimate and check of $2000. That’s not gonna cover anything! I’ve sent an email back with contractor, estimates, landscaping estimate, and it would be a total of around $8000. I sent all this to my insurance adjuster, going through his insurance at this point. Waiting for her response, and have not cashed any checks from them.

Seeking advice on if I’m doing the right thing, or if I should be doing more! I also have some intrusive thoughts since this, since I have a two year-old and a four-year-old and a dog who’s always playing where he crashed through and I can’t help but think what if this happened during the day.
