Accommodation in NYC

I’m wondering what the best and cheap way to stay is for me and my partner. I’ve been looking at package deals that seem incredibly cheap(like priceline. is it trustworthy? ive never used middle men). Has anyone done a trustworthy package before (flight + hotel)? because it sounds ideal for us.

itll be 3 weeks there and our first time, so i kinda just want the most ideal for the cheapest price is. we are young and not immune to bad accommodation for cheap. but something nicer would be cool if we can afford it. max budget per night would be like $400 but i really dont need some 4 star place i just want a clean bed and safety and close to public transport and easy to get around.
