Some appreciation for the editing in The Vampire Lestat

Show Only

I know the editing in the first episode was a little off-putting for some because of its rapid pace but I really appreciated it. TVL is so different from IWTV and a simple perspective change alone wouldn't be enough to really capture just how drastically different Lestat's perspective is from Louis' perspective. A lot of work has to go into approaching the show with an entirely different energy and I think it was done well.

In IWTV, Louis' mindset is quite somber and reflective and because he really wants to take the time to remember things as they were, not as he made them out to be, it has a much more languid pace which works extremely well for the story being told. In TVL, so far, Lestat is being kind of flippant about his own feelings. He's denying that songs are about Louis, he's clearly not okay with the dynamic he has with Gabriella but he has a refusal or an inability to sit with the discomfort for too long, etc. So, the editing being kind of quick and frenetic is just perfectly suited to how Lestat's storytelling is coming across so far and it's great.

Another element about the editing that I've noticed is that it's very rhythmic. Because Lestat is musically inclined, the way the story is presented is also musically inclined and the pacing of the edit has a certain musical quality to it that's kind of hard for me to put into words. It's just something I noticed that I really liked.

As we have more episodes and get closer to Lestat (as of now, it feels like he has us at a distance), I'm eager to see how the editing will change more to suit the frame of mind with which he's relaying these stories.
