Handling State Persistence in Flutter: A practical approach with Shared Preferences
"Hi everyone! 👋
I’ve been working on a personal project and faced a common hurdle: making the app remember user settings (like notification preferences) after it closes.
I decided to use shared_preferences and found it to be a great, lightweight solution for local data persistence. I put together a StorageService to keep things clean.
Dart
import 'package:shared_preferences/shared_preferences.dart'; class StorageService { // عشان نحفظ حالة التنبيهات Future<void> setNotificationsEnabled(bool value) async { final prefs = await SharedPreferences.getInstance(); await prefs.setBool('isNotificationsEnabled', value); } //In order to recover the status when the application opens
Future<bool> getNotificationsEnabled() async { final prefs = await SharedPreferences.getInstance(); return prefs.getBool('isNotificationsEnabled') ?? true; // Default value true } } </bool></void>
I documented the full implementation process and a few lessons I learned along the way (specifically why await is crucial here) on my blog: https://anamuslim-net.blogspot.com/2026/06/flutter-shared-preferences-guide.html
I hope this helps anyone else just starting out with Flutter state management! Does anyone have a preferred way to handle this, or perhaps a better approach for more complex data?"
