After spending a lot of time building maps in Prehistoric Kingdom, I decided to try something unusual: creating a massive border region between North America and Europe separated by a relatively narrow sea channel. In this scenario, the left side of the map represents North America, while the right side represents Europe. The ocean between them is wide enough to act as a natural barrier, but close enough that over many generations some animals occasionally manage to cross it. The result has been one of the most interesting migration experiments I've ever watched in the game. At first I expected both continents to remain mostly isolated from one another. Instead, I started seeing repeated waves of dispersal. Several North American species gradually expanded their range toward the coast and eventually established populations in Europe. At the same time, a number of European species successfully crossed the sea and settled in North America. One of the most interesting examples involved the two species of Torvosaurus. The North American Torvosaurus tanneri population became incredibly successful. Over time, the majority of Tanneri individuals migrated across the sea and established a large population in Europe. Their numbers grew rapidly thanks to the abundance of prey and the relatively open territories available to them. However, things became much more complicated when Torvosaurus gurneyi began moving in the opposite direction. Large numbers of Gurneyi individuals crossed from Europe into North America. Once they arrived, they expanded aggressively and ended up occupying several of the most important hunting territories that had traditionally been dominated by Tanneri populations. These regions contained some of the richest prey resources on the continent, making them highly valuable. What happened next was completely unexpected. As soon as the European Tanneri population effectively "realized" that their North American feeding grounds had been taken over, a major reverse migration began. Huge numbers of Tanneri crossed the sea again, returning from Europe back to North America. The returning population was so large that they gradually pushed the Gurneyi populations out of the contested territories. Over time, the balance shifted completely. The returning Tanneri re-established dominance over their historical hunting grounds, while the displaced Gurneyi populations slowly retreated. Eventually, many of the Gurneyi groups abandoned North America altogether and migrated back across the sea to Europe, where they once again became primarily a European population. Watching this unfold almost felt like observing a real biogeographic event rather than a zoo simulation. The large herbivores created equally fascinating migration patterns.Several sauropod species originating in North America successfully crossed the sea and established breeding populations in Europe. Once settled, they transformed local ecosystems by opening migration corridors and creating new grazing networks. Some European herbivores adapted to their presence, while others were gradually pushed into less favorable habitats. The constant movement of animals between continents created a dynamic ecosystem that never seemed to stabilize completely. Predator populations followed prey migrations. Herbivores expanded into newly available territory. Coastal regions became hotspots of biodiversity where animals from both continents regularly interacted. Some areas ended up feeling almost like ecological melting pots. It was possible to see species with North American origins living alongside European species that would never normally encounter one another. In contrast, other regions remained strongly dominated by their original fauna, creating sharp ecological boundaries despite the relatively short distance separating the continents. One of my favorite aspects of this experiment is how the map naturally developed a sense of history. Every migration wave left behind traces of previous populations. Some species became invasive. Others were displaced. A few managed to thrive on both continents simultaneously. The North America–Europe border region has easily become one of the most interesting ecosystems I've built in Prehistoric Kingdom. What started as a simple geographic experiment ended up turning into a constantly evolving story of migration, competition, territorial disputes, recolonization, and ecological change. It's probably the closest I've come to creating a living prehistoric world rather than just another park. But if Allosaurus and Stegosaurus are added in Update 17, I'm going to run to the Prehistoric Kingdom right now!!!!
