I made two plugins that make Obsidian both nicer to look at and nicer to use
As a designer who's used Bear and Apple Notes for years, the one thing I always found a shame after switching to Obsidian was how links are displayed. In Bear, Notes, and even Freeform, links look great and are easy to work with — but most existing Obsidian plugins wrap a link inside a code block to fake the preview look. The downside: when you try to select the link, you have to hit a specific button, otherwise you end up selecting a whole chunk of tag text.
Links in Canvas were another letdown. Canvas itself is great, but pasting a URL embeds the entire web page, which actually makes it harder to organize when you're collecting lots of links (and some pages just look bad embedded because of their responsive layout).
As for images, I always wanted a way to view them that matches how I work on macOS day to day — simple, quick to preview, and easy to share or copy, instead of having to open the original file every time.
So I built these two plugins: Link Card Preview and Image Peek. With them installed, Obsidian has officially become the best-looking and most usable note app I've ever used. Both are free, open source (MIT), and work on desktop and mobile.
1. Link Card Preview
Turns a bare URL on its own line into an Apple-style rich link card. No code blocks, no special syntax, and it never touches your Markdown — disable the plugin and you get the plain link back.
- Renders in Reading view, Live Preview, and Canvas
- Three adaptive layouts based on the fetched image (large / compact / text-only — never a broken-image box)
- Extracts the dominant color of the thumbnail and applies it as a subtle tint, adapting to light/dark themes
- Caches images locally, so cards keep working offline and even after CDN links expire
- Dedicated fetch chain for Threads posts — shows the post text right on the card
- Just select the link and it restores the original URL; inline links are left untouched
2. Image Peek
Quick Look for your images. Double-click an image — or hover over it and hit Space, exactly like Finder — and it zooms out from the thumbnail with a FLIP animation, then closes right back into place.
- Pan, scroll/pinch zoom, and arrow-key browsing across every image on the page
- Works in notes and on Canvas
- Title bar gives you Copy / Share / Open in default app / Reveal in Finder
Both are in the Community Plugins directory. To install, go to Settings → Community plugins → Browse in Obsidian, search for "Link Card Preview" or "Image Peek", and click Install. They work together but also fine on their own.
