I recently listened to the audiobook version of Beyond Thought: The Power of Positive Habits. I should probably mention that I'm not really a self-help reader. I rarely pick up motivational or personal development books, but I do occasionally listen to audiobooks in those categories while walking, driving, or doing other things.

What surprised me wasn't necessarily the advice itself—it was how much it made me think about the way self-help books present change.

The core message is appealing: most people fail because they rely on motivation, and the solution is to build habits that eventually run on "autopilot." That's not a crazy idea. Habits obviously matter, and a lot of success probably does come from repeated behaviors rather than bursts of motivation.

What caught my attention was the language around those ideas. The audiobook constantly frames ordinary behavior change as something that can be "programmed" through concepts like cognitive restructuring, visualization, and automatic success. Sometimes it felt like I was listening to a book about habits, and other times it felt like I was listening to a marketing presentation wrapped in scientific terminology.

To be fair, a lot of the advice is perfectly reasonable. Sleep matters. Consistency matters. Tracking your behavior can help. None of those ideas are controversial.

The question I kept asking myself was whether the book was teaching something genuinely new or simply repackaging familiar advice in a more exciting way.

It also reminded me of Atomic Habits, even though the two books approach change very differently. One emphasizes systems, environment, and repetition. The other seems much more focused on internal programming and mindset.

Maybe that's why I found it interesting despite not being the target audience. I wasn't really listening to learn how to build habits. I was listening because I was curious about why books like this resonate with so many people.

My takeaway wasn't that the book is bad. It was that many self-help books seem to operate on two levels at once. On one level, they contain practical advice that is often useful. On another level, they sell a narrative that makes change feel simpler, faster, and more controllable than it usually is.

And honestly, that left me wondering whether the real product is the advice itself—or the feeling that change is finally within reach.

Do you read/listen to them for the actual ideas, or do you think their main value is motivation and encouragement rather than insight?
