Random appreciation of Belgians from a foreigners eyes

🎨 Culture

I have been living in Belgium for four years now, and although I’ve also spent time with internationals during the first years, I wanted to share a general appreciation of some of the observations I’ve made about Belgian people.

Of course, these are broad generalizations and do not apply to individuals, but I’ve come to notice certain traits that I genuinely appreciate. There are also negative traits in which I could make a post about, but this isn’t going to be a negative one.

I find that Belgians tend to be quite accurate and measured in the way they communicate. There is often a sense of thoughtfulness and accuracy in interactions, and I value that when it is needed. Its not crossing over directness meanwhile being rude. Its just thoughtful, measured and accurate. And I love it.

I also appreciate that help is usually given when it is asked for, and not unsolicited advice(unlike Germans with their intruding your personal space, attitude), which allows people to maintain their own space and autonomy.

You guys create warm, cozy, and friendly atmosphere, and I admire the importance placed on family, friendship, and stability. In addition, I enjoy the more understated humor and the ability to laugh at oneself and not take life too seriously.

While the culture can sometimes come across as more reserved or less expressive (compared to spanish ot Dutch for instance), I’ve personally like the quietness and calmness especially the respect for personal boundaries.

Overall, it’s a culture I’ve come to respect for its balance of independence, subtle warmth, and groundedness.
