Lost Equipment?

I coach a new player program and we had a kid join us a couple weeks ago for the first time. I don’t know the kid or the family well, but they seem nice enough. That week, the kid (who is 5) left his helmet in our locker room. I grabbed it and initially put it with my own stuff, but later before leaving dropped it in the Lost & Found at our rink. Well, turns out it’s not there anymore. It has been several weeks since the kid was here last (it’s a drop in program so this is normal).

The question is: do I offer to replace it? I know it’s not my responsibility, but I’ve replaced water bottles for kids before when they lose them. That’s like $2 (and I bought a bunch in bulk because my own kids lose them at an alarming rate), this would be a chunk of change.
