Is he crushing on me now???
I’m a female barber in my late 20s and this started with one of my clients. He’s around my age, works a pretty serious corporate job, is very career-focused, socially awkward in an endearing way, and has told me he’s single. He’s an only child and doesn’t seem to have a huge social life outside of work.
I’ve been cutting his hair for a while now. At first he was pretty reserved, but over time he opened up a lot. He started sharing more personal things, asking questions about my life, remembering details from previous conversations, and generally seeming more interested than the average client.
Eventually I decided to shoot my shot. Instead of waiting around wondering, I invited him to walk around a lake with me one evening. He said yes immediately.
We spent a couple hours walking, talking, and feeding ducks. Nothing romantic happened. He seemed nervous, there wasn’t a ton of eye contact, and most of the conversation was about work and life. At the end we hugged and went home.
After that, though, he kind of went cold.
Not rude. Not avoidant. Just… no follow-up. No asking me out. No texting. No obvious effort to continue anything outside of our barber/client relationship.
So I basically accepted that he wasn’t interested and moved on.
Here’s where I’m confused.
Lately he’s been acting different again.
At his last appointment he seemed more curious about my life than usual and was asking more questions. He asked what I was doing later that night, which stood out because it felt less like small talk and more like he genuinely wanted to know.
Then recently he booked what I can only describe as an emergency haircut. He came in earlier than he normally would and literally said he didn’t really need a haircut. His hair honestly looked fine.
He paid cash, hung around talking, and the whole interaction felt a little different than normal. Not wildly flirty, but more engaged and interested than he had been for a while.
So now I’m wondering:
Did I scare him off when I asked him to hang out and he’s finally getting comfortable again?
Is he interested but incredibly hesitant/socially awkward?
Is this just a friendly client who likes talking to his barber?
Am I reading way too much into a guy getting a haircut?
