The manner in which Bittu Sarkar conducted himself at Deolo Park, Kalimpong, reportedly over an entry fee of just ₹20, was highly unfortunate and disappointing.

Instead of showing respect to the staff member entrusted with collecting tickets, he chose to create an unnecessary confrontation. The woman involved was simply carrying out her assigned duties on behalf of the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA), a semi-autonomous administrative body established in 2012 for the governance and development of Darjeeling, Kalimpong, and adjoining areas.

Videos of the incident that have been widely shared on social media also appear to show other members of the group participating in the argument, further escalating a situation that could have been resolved calmly and respectfully.

It is important to understand that the entry fee collected at Deolo Park is not a toll tax. These funds are used for the maintenance and upkeep of the park, including cleaning, infrastructure maintenance, and the salaries of workers whose livelihoods depend on it. Unfortunately, this distinction appears to have been overlooked during the incident.

Kalimpong has always welcomed visitors with warmth and hospitality. Our people are known for their courteous and respectful behaviour towards tourists. However, that goodwill should not be mistaken for weakness, nor should frontline workers be subjected to unnecessary hostility while performing their duties.

We sincerely welcome all tourists visiting Kalimpong and hope they continue to enjoy the beauty and hospitality of our region. At the same time, we request everyone to cooperate with local regulations and pay the modest entry fee of ₹20. This small contribution helps support the workers and families who depend on tourism-related employment and ensures that public spaces such as Deolo Park remain clean, safe, and well-maintained.

Let us promote responsible tourism, mutual respect, and understanding so that such incidents do not occur
