I hate dashboards. So, I built a "Zero-Custody" SaaS that runs entirely on WhatsApp and the Notion API for on-the-go access. Here is the architecture.
I’ve spent 15 years as a backend engineer, mostly building massive, bloated monolithic applications. But recently, I realized a hard truth: most B2B users actually hate SaaS dashboards.
Especially here in India, business runs entirely on WhatsApp. Forcing an agency owner to open a browser, log into a React dashboard, and navigate 3 menus just to log an expense or generate a Stripe link is massive friction.
So I decided to see if I could build a completely headless SaaS. No frontend. Zero data lock-in.
The Tech Stack & Flow:
- The UI: WhatsApp Business API.
- The Brain: Laravel backend handling the webhooks + Gemini API for NLP.
- The Database: The user's own Notion workspace (via Notion API).
How it works in practice:
- You send a WhatsApp voice note: "Log a $200 server expense for the Smith project."
- Laravel catches the webhook, passes the audio to Gemini. Gemini extracts the JSON intent (Type: Expense, Amount: 200, Client: Smith).
- Laravel pushes that payload directly to the user's Notion database.
- If it's an invoice, the system generates a raw Stripe Payment Link, stores the permanent URL in Notion, and sends the link back to the user on WhatsApp.
The "Zero-Custody" Rule: MySQL database literally stores nothing except API keys and user preferences. No client names, no project scopes, no financial data. If my server burns down, the user loses nothing because 100% of their data lives in their Notion.
Curious if anyone else here is experimenting with WhatsApp as a primary UI instead of building traditional web apps?
Happy to share how I structured the Gemini audio-parsing webhooks if any Laravel devs are stuck on that.
