Hi! I'm new to mext, i'd like to know more

Hi, I’m an Italian student who graduated in April with a bachelor’s degree in modern literature in Italy, and I’m planning to enroll in a master’s program in September. I only recently learned about the MEXT opportunity and was thinking of starting to “prepare” to apply for it next year. Obviously, this would mean putting my master’s studies on hold for at least a while, I suppose, for what is, after all, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I’d like to ask for some general information: what are the basic prerequisites? Is knowledge of Japanese required, or is English sufficient? And what level is required? Obviously, if possible, I’d also like to know what the most “compelling” applications look like to get accepted. In short, the basic requirements to at least try to get in. Thank you very much in advance.
