Cleanup work is the worst service a bookkeeper can offer
I know this is controversial because cleanup is how a lot of bookkeepers fill gaps in their schedule and it can be good money but after years of doing it I'm convinced it's a trap. Cleanup clients are by definition the clients who let their books get messy in the first place, the personality type that ignores their finances for 6 to 18 months doesn't magically become organized after you clean up the file, you do the cleanup and hand them a beautiful set of books then 4 months later they're back to chaos because the behavior never changed.
The other problem is that every cleanup is quoted based on what you think the mess looks like from the outside and the actual mess is always worse once you're inside, I quoted 10 hours on a cleanup that took 28 because what looked like 6 months of miscategorized transactions was actually 18 months of unfiled sales tax, missing invoices, personal expenses tangled with business, and a bank account that had been closed mid year with no record of where the remaining balance went.
Now I only take clients who commit to ongoing monthly service, if you want cleanup that's fine but it comes with a 12 month engagement no exceptions, the clients who agree are the ones who actually want to change their behavior, the ones who just want a one time fix go somewhere else and honestly that's better for both of us.
