TIFU by insulting my situationship’s mom and sister during an argument
Me (19M) and a girl (18F) have been in a complicated “trying again” phase for months. We’ve had recurring arguments because I feel like she’s not showing enough effort, while she feels pressured and overwhelmed.
Today things blew up after a joke she made about running off to find a guy… that hit a nerve, and the argument eventually got to a conversation we’ve had before.
She said she’s actively trying to work on things, but doesn’t want to tell me specifically what she’s doing because she feels that’s private and I don’t need to know every detail of her process.
I asked who that logic made sense to.
She said her mom and sister agreed with her.
For some reason, instead of realizing I was already angry and not thinking straight, I fired back with:
“Yeah, and look at their relationships.” (For context they are both single parents)
The second it came out I knew it was bad.
Not only did it have absolutely nothing to do with the discussion, but it was basically me using people she loves as evidence that her perspective was invalid.
I wasn’t arguing the point anymore.
I was trying to win.
And that’s usually when you say something you regret.
The worst part is that her mom has been kind to me (for the most part). Her family has included me in plenty of things over the course of our relationship and even after we broke up. Neither of them was involved in the argument, and neither deserved to catch a stray because I was frustrated.
What started as a conversation about communication somehow ended with me taking a shot at two innocent people who weren’t even in the room.
TL;DR: Got into an argument with a girl I’m trying to rebuild a relationship with. She said her mom and sister agreed with her perspective. Instead of disagreeing like a normal person, I responded by pointing out they’re both single moms. Immediately realized I’d crossed a line and turned a relationship argument into an insult directed at people who weren’t even involved.
