The thing that helped me most after a breakup wasn't therapy… it was an empty basketball court

venting/ranting

A few months ago, I went through a breakup that hit me a lot harder than I expected

Nothing dramatic happened. No cheating, no huge fight, no big moment that made it obvious things were ending…

It was just one of those relationships that slowly becomes part of your everyday life until one day it's gone, and suddenly everything feels weird…

The apartment felt quieter…

Weekends felt longer…

And my brain seemed determined to replay the same conversations over and over every night when I was trying to sleep…

For a while, I tried to do the usual things like scrolling through old photos

Overanalyzed text messages

Replayed every decision I made during the relationship as if I was going to discover some hidden answer

It wasn't helping

One evening after work, I stopped by a local basketball court with an old ball I had sitting in my car

I wasn't trying to train

I wasn't trying to improve

I mostly just didn't want to go home yet and be there alone and go over and over again and again

The court was empty, so I started shooting around

At first I was still stuck in my head. Thinking about the breakup. Thinking about everything that had happened

Then somewhere along the way, I realized I'd gone fifteen or twenty minutes without thinking about it at all

I was just focused on shooting

Making the next shot

Getting my feet set

Chasing rebounds

For the first time in weeks, my mind got quiet

Not happy

Not fixed

Just quiet

So I came back the next day

Then the day after that

It soon became a habit…

I’d finish work, go to the court as the sun was going down and spend an hour or two there by myself and I didn’t even need anybody

No music

No podcasts

No phone

Just basketball

What surprised me was the soothing effect of repetition

Catch

Shoot

Miss

Rebound

Try again

There's something about focusing on one simple thing over and over that leaves less room for everything else rattling around in your head.

After a while I realized I was spending half my workouts chasing rebounds, so I picked up one of the rebound systems

Honestly, I bought it because I was tired of running all over the court

What I didn't expect was that it would make the sessions even more relaxing

The ball came back

I shot again

And the whole thing became almost meditative

Somewhere along the way my shot improved too

A few of the regulars who play pickup there started commenting on it, which made me laugh because they assumed I was training for basketball

The truth is that I showed up because I was trying to survive a breakup

And these days I'm doing much better

But I still go to the court several nights a week and not because I need an escape anymore

Just because it's one of the few places where life slows down, my phone stays in my pocket, and my brain finally gets a chance to shut up for a while
