I dont get the play while you wait

so i havent played in ages.
i open the game and theres a 4 min queue time.
i click play while you wait and now im in a survivor lobby.
it says click "leave" to go back to your killer lobby, you click it and suddenly your not queueing.
in game there is no indicatior that you are still in queue for killer.

and then after i joined a survivor lobby, i played a whole survivor match. much longer than the estimated 4 min queue time of the killer lobby.
