Is anyone else struggling with their parish’s homilies?

I like my priest and all, but sometimes his homiletics are way too out there for my liking. For example, he frequently says things like, “Christianity isn’t the only way,” or, “Other people don’t believe in Jesus, and that’s okay,” when Jesus says, “I am the way and the truth and the light, no one comes to the Father, accept through me,” and, “God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son that whoever believes in should not perish but have eternal life.”…It seems pretty clear that Jesus desires us to worship him. He also says things like, “Jesus sought no glory,” even though St. Peter says, "But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen." He says we shouldn’t be trying to convert people, but isn’t wanting to share the Gospel a gift of the Holy Spirit? He also had a sermon where the theme was, “Don’t be like Jesus, be you.”

On a personal level, he mentioned the “sin of mass food production.” As someone who grew up on a farm and went on to study agriculture in college, I was deeply offended that a priest would call the safest and most ethically raised food supply in the world a sin. I sent him a list of facts such as how agriculture has become more sustainable since the 1970s despite becoming more productive. If you want to have a garden and some backyard chickens, that is great; channel your inner St. Francis and enjoy yourself, but that is not going to solve world hunger at all. Instead, we should be promoting agricultural education in schools and allowing people to make the connection between their food and where it comes from. Okay tangent over about that…I wrote a homily about agriculture if anyone’s interested in reading it.

My priest also likes to flagellate the institutional church and how the church was meant to be small and intimate. There is some serious study to be done on how the Church has errored and sinned, and it can even be shared in a homily, but when every Sunday is talking about how bad Christianity has been to the world, how does that help us with our mission? What are the optics of a Christian church constantly bemoaning the cultural heritage of the Church? Shouldn’t our main goal as a church be sharing the Gospel and unlocking the scriptures for our congregations?
