How do I build financial independence after spending 10+ years working only in my family's business?
I’ve spent the last 11 years working in my family’s jewelry manufacturing and export business. I joined during my college. I did BBA from a local college in our city. The problem is that I’ve never worked anywhere else and I’ve never built a separate financial identity. I was never given a salary separately, but all the expenses were taken care of by my parents. Recently, my parents forced me to seriously think about independence. A major crisis happened recently where my parents didn’t approve of my partner. I’ve accepted that I can’t change what my parents beliefs are, but I know I cannot always let them have the final say for me. For the first time, I’m asking myself what happens if I need to build a life that isn’t dependent on my family’s approval, business, or financial support. I think I need to leave the house, business to be able to make the decisions myself.
I know how this business works, I’ve been managing a major chunk of it for the past 5-6 years, I’m handling everything from customers, production, accounting, almost everything.
The biggest uncertainty that I am facing is I don’t know how useful these skills are outside of the business that I am in, I don’t know any other professional skills such as Tech, Finance, creatives, etc. Building something of my own, even small in the same industry requires some serious capital and I have no personal savings as such. I don’t know what someone with my background would earn in the market, since these jobs are very niche.
Part of me feels like I have 10 years of valuable experience. Another part of me feels like I have spent 10 years in a very specific environment and may struggle outside of it.
For people who have left family businesses or built careers after spending years inside one, if you had no personal savings but significant industry experience, what would your first steps be?
The difficulty I’m having is uncertainty. I want to understand If I can stand on my own feet and what path toward financial independence would realistically look like
