Maine Coon Matting

Hi all, I have a 3 year old Maine Coon. Unfortunately I was in the hospital for over a month , some of that time in a coma and although my sister who was watching him brushed him she did not get down to the skin and now there's some matting. It's pretty widespread. Would a lion cut be the way to go? I'm worried about the fur not growing back the same. Has anyone had experience with this? Thanks so much.
