Are expensive floor mats actually safer, or are people overpaying?

just bought a car and I’m surprised how quickly accessory prices add up. Basic universal mats are cheap, but every forum makes it sound like you need custom molded mats or you’re asking for problems.

For anyone who has done a real cheap floor mats vs expensive comparison, what actually changes? Is it mostly better fit and coverage, or is there a real safety difference because cheap mats can move around near the pedals? I don’t care about fancy branding. I just want something that stays anchored, doesn’t curl, and keeps the carpet reasonably clean.
