Why do so many people believe in the bible?

It's as if, it says something in the bible, or even vaguely suggests it, it's taken as absolute truth. Because god didn't write the bible, right? It was written by a bunch of men over a long period of time and at some stage was compiled together into what it is today. Ok, so these men who wrote it may claim to have been taking to god and this is exactly what he told me to write... but any random guy could claim the same thing. I could just say, "Hey, god just spoke to me and he says we should all eat carrots on Tuesdays".
