26 Years Old. Wanting to Join the Army After Opioid Addiction Recovery (4 Years Sober)
I’m 26 years old and trying to join the Army. I have a history of opioid addiction, but I’ve been clean and sober for over 4 years. During my recovery, I completed treatment, maintained employment, stayed out of legal trouble, and worked hard to build a stable life.
Part of my recovery included being prescribed buprenorphine/Suboxone in the past. I’m currently working toward discontinuing treatment under medical supervision and want to understand how that may affect military eligibility.
I know MEPS can access medical records through Genesis, and I have no intention of hiding anything. I’m looking for honest information from people who have been through a similar situation.
A few questions:
- Has anyone successfully joined the Army after a history of opioid addiction and buprenorphine/Suboxone treatment?
- How long did you need to be off medication before being considered?
- What documentation did MEPS or the waiver authority require?
- Does having over 4 years of sobriety help when requesting a waiver?
- Is there anything I should start gathering now to improve my chances?
I’m not looking for ways around the rules. I just want to know what to realistically expect. Joining the military is something I’ve wanted for a long time, and I’m trying to do everything the right way.
Any advice is appreciated.
