Dosage interval: remain at 3 weeks vs switch back to 2 weeks?
My 18 year old daughter has moderate asthma and eczema and has been on dupixent for 2 years. It has worked incredibly well for her and she has zero symptoms. 5 months ago she lost her insurance coverage so we switched from taking the medication every 2 weeks to every 3 weeks as a precaution: we stockpiled a few needles to give us more time to try to regain insurance coverage.
We have seen no decrease whatsoever in fully controlling both her asthma and eczema moving her from her 2 week injection cycle to 3 weeks. Last week she regained insurance coverage and with her new job's insurance plan, it will be fully covered.
Should she switch back to every 2-week dosing, or remain at 3-week? We asked her dermatologist and respirologist and received different answers. One said all of the safety data and effectively is based on a 2-week dosage schedule and even though at 3 weeks she is symptom free, her underlying tissue may still have inflammation. Her other doctor said if 3 weeks is working perfectly for her, she could try continuing at that interval and only switch back to 2 weeks if needed. Her doctor said the main issue with doing this is she might be taking a risk with insurance coverage as the medication is technically supposed to be administered every 2 weeks.
I read many posts in this sub where people have tapered off dupixent, with people injecting anywhere from 3-12 weeks. I also read the NIH study of 595 patients who tapered down to 3-4 weeks with a high success rate. I understand every situation is different, so I'm unsure what is best.
- Has anyone ever had any issues switching back to a 2 week injection cycle after being on a 3 week cycle?
- What is the bigger risk: continuing to inject every 3 weeks vs going back to a 2 week schedule?
