should i move in with a temporary roommate if the arrangement works practically but i’m unsure about the emotional/social compatibility?

Discussion

i’m in a temporary living situation with someone i had only known casually before. he moved to my city about three weeks ago, is looking for a job, and needed a place to stay for a bit. i had space, so it happened naturally.

on a practical level, things are mostly fine. he is clean, organized, calm, helps around the house, buys groceries and has paid his share of the bills this month. he is not chaotic or disrespectful.

the issue is that i’m not sure practical coexistence is the same as being compatible enough to actually look for a place together. he is very self-contained, has his own routine, spends a lot of time doing his own thing, and doesn’t seem very proactive about us building a real roommate dynamic beyond sharing space. i was expecting more of a friendship/partnership feeling, not just two people occupying the same house.

there was also a moment recently where he had someone over while i unexpectedly had to come back home because of an emergency. he did not do anything wrong, and i had said guests were okay, but the situation made me realize that if we actually lived together long-term, i would need much clearer expectations around guests, privacy, communication and shared spaces.

so now i’m wondering if i should slow down before considering moving into a new apartment with him. he is a good temporary roommate, but i don’t know if that means he would be a good long-term roommate.

for people who have lived with roommates: how do you tell the difference between “this is working for now” and “this is actually a good person to sign a lease with”? what conversations would you have before moving forward?
