Safe to travel to Mexico with bad tattoo?

Visiting Mexico for the first time, going to Jalisco. But I have a visible tattoo that I cant hide very well in the sun. ( I am from cold country in northen Europe ) so everything south of my place is very hot for me.

The tattoo I have is shared with is a well know gang in America with members from centralamerica.
At that time I got the tattoo barley no one have heard about them here in Europe, and I did not know it either.

Can I just tell people (if they care) that Im just a kid from europe that did not know? Im 30 something but look like 17 and do not look like a thug at all. Skinny and short.
