It’s hard to miss the former Rite Aid buildings scattered throughout Hampton Roads.

Some are still empty shells. Others have found new purposes. Many sit waiting to be leased, while a portion are listed for sale.

For years, the Philadelphia-based drugstore and pharmacy retailer was a thriving business throughout the nation, until bankruptcy led to the closure of its remaining stores in the fall of 2025.

Now the question: How are the freestanding buildings — typically with footprints of 11,000 to 14,000 square feet in highly visible signalized intersections with dedicated parking lots — being transformed?

Here’s a spattering of what we’ve seen pop up in former [Rite Aids](https://www.pilotonline.com/2024/04/19/rite-aid-closing-3-more-hampton-roads-locations-as-restructuring-progresses/):

* Green Clean Express Auto Wash took over spots on Holland Road in Virginia Beach and on Battlefield Boulevard North in Chesapeake.
* Dollar Tree assumed several locations, including one on South Rosemont Road in Virginia Beach and two in the Deep Creek area of Chesapeake on Old Mill Road and South Military Highway.
* Riverside Primary Care now operates one of its medical clinics out of the former Rite Aid on Benns Church Boulevard in Smithfield.
