Is there any reason to cure dragonrot?

I had heard NPCs affected by it don't trade or talk but they seem to be doing everything fine even after being affected by dragonrot for a while. Just beat the corrupted monk (purple one) and don't see any change in the NPCs or game. Is this something that affects later choices?
