I’ve been doing some research into jaw surgery lately to see if it might help with some breathing issues I’ve been dealing with for a while. Whenever I try to breathe through my nose, it's pretty difficult, and I constantly find myself having to flare my nostrils and engage my facial muscles to get enough air. Because of this, I think I'm mouth breathing at night. I wake up nearly every morning with an incredibly parched mouth, sometimes to the point where my tongue hurt because of how dry it is. I also deal with pretty constant brain fog and find myself zoning out all the time during the day. I haven't really looked into sleep apnea too deeply since I wasn't sure if my symptoms fit the full description, but the daytime fatigue is definitely a struggle.  
For some background on my orthodontics so far, my dentist originally referred me to my current ortho when I asked about braces and potential expansion. I had a narrow palate and some crowding, and I really wanted to avoid extractions. My ortho initially told me expansion wasn't "really necessary", but I pushed for it anyway and ended up getting an RPE expander put in back in February, which I'm scheduled to get off in about a month. However, since I'm turning 18 soon, I'm starting to worry that the expansion was mostly just dental tipping rather than actual skeletal movement, especially since my nose breathing hasn't improved.  
I'm starting to wonder if a surgical route is what I actually need to fix the underlying airway structure. Has anyone here transitioned from standard orthodontics or an expander into a jaw surgery plan for similar breathing issues? I'd really appreciate any advice on what my next steps should be, or how to go about getting a proper airway assessment or scan.
