Anyone pursuing Ms cognitive science at an IIT with an engineering background?

Hi,I'm currently pursuing an engineering degree and I'm interested in cognitive science, but I don't have much exposure to research yet. For those who have transitioned from engineering to cognitive science, what path did you take? Also if I'm planning to apply through gate would you recommend writing the cse paper or the psychology paper? I'd appreciate any advice or experiences you can share.
