I got charged a lot more than 10% tariff ordering in the US from Spain

Other

This post is just for your information if you live in the US.

I ordered extra shift knobs and face plates from SHH a couple of months ago for my old SHH shifter. The package was shipped by FedEx, came about 3 weeks later than the original estimation, and I received a bill from FedEx a month after delivery.

According to US customs documents the claimed value was 30 euros, and the 10% duty plus other things came to just under $5. But FedEx wants to charge a $15 "disbursement fee" (a flat $15 for low value items). So instead of paying 10% more than the price I saw on checkout (which was my expectation when I read about the tariff situation), I am actually paying a LOT more.

I read online that some people are getting future packages delayed or getting harassed by debt collectors sent by FedEx when they don't pay the fees. I also find some posts a few years ago saying that the disbursement fee was $10. From my perspective FedEx is exploiting the tariff situation to charge us as much as possible, and the fee keeps rising.

I emailed SHH about this buying experience. I don't know if other shipping companies are better, but personally I will avoid FedEx as much as possible from now on.
