Looking for input on whether this opening chapter keeps you hooked and if the narrative voice feels distinct right from the start. 

Here's the first page of the first chapter: 

>*Let me begin with a confession.*

>*Not the theatrical kind — the kind performed on bent knees before an audience assembled specifically to receive it. I have been present at enough of those in my life to know they are rarely about truth. The louder a confession, the more it has been designed to be heard rather than to be honest. What I mean is something quieter. A simple acknowledgement, offered to you directly, before we go any further into this account.*

>*I am not what they say I am.*

>*I want you to sit with that sentence for a moment before I continue. Not because it is shocking — I suspect, if you have lived long enough and thought carefully enough, it does not shock you at all. But because everything that follows depends on whether you are able to hold it. Whether you can read what I am about to tell you without reaching, at the difficult moments, for the more comfortable version. The version where I am God and therefore above the weight of what happened. The version where it was all planned and all necessary and all, in the final accounting, just.*

>*I cannot offer you that version. I tried to, once. A long time ago, to a frightened man on a battlefield, I said things about the eternal and the imperishable that I believed then and believe now — but which were also, I have come to understand, the things I needed to say in that particular moment to a particular man who was falling apart and could not afford to fall apart. I was not lying. I was choosing, from everything that was true, the truths that would hold him together. There is a difference. I have made that difference my life's work. But it is not the same as the whole truth, and the whole truth is what I owe you here.*

>*So. Let me tell you what I am.*
