Behavior change is a skill, not willpower: what health psychology actually does

A reframe that helps a lot of people: most failed behavior change is not a willpower deficit, it is a missing skill set. Health psychology is the part of the field that treats the mind and body as one system and uses evidence-based techniques to change behavior in a way that holds.

A few things it tends to address well: adjustment to a chronic diagnosis (the emotional and identity work that medicine alone does not cover), the genuinely treatable psychological layer underneath chronic pain, and stress-driven physical symptoms that have a real behavioral component. None of this is a substitute for medical care. Done right it is coordinated with it.

The useful mindset shift is that the techniques exist and they work, so the question becomes which skills you have not been taught yet, rather than what is wrong with your discipline.
